Marina Shakhman, Psy. D.

Dr. Shakhman is a licensed clinical psychologist and Co-Clinical Director of Grand Oaks Behavioral Health, LLC. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Minor in Biology from Loyola University and her Master's and subsequent Doctoral degree from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, Illinois. She is a consulting psychologist to Lake Forest Hospital, and works with primary care physicians in the community to coordinate behavioral health services for patients. Dr. Shakhman has extensive experience working with adults, adolescents, children, families, and couples in various settings (private practice, hospital, school, community mental health). Dr. Shakhman works with adults, adolescents, and children to overcome social, emotional, behavioral, developmental, and/or academic challenges. She has specialized training to work with families and couples and is an experienced group therapist and student supervisor. Her primary areas of interest include marital/family/interpersonal relationship issues, mood disorders, trauma, problematic personality characteristics, child/adolescent psychology, and the integration of behavioral health treatment with primary care practice. She values the psychologist-patient relationship and is interactive, collaborative, and educational in the way she works with patients. She believes psychotherapy should focus on health, well-being, growth, and healing, rather than on a “mental illness” or “pathology” orientation. Her clinical orientation combines psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, family systems, interpersonal, and solution-focused techniques to empower individuals to have more of the life they envision for themselves.

Sophia Shlain, LCSW, SSW

Sophia Shlain, LCSW,SSW is Co-Clinical Director of Grand Oaks Behavioral Health, LLC. She holds a Masters degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Chicago, School of Social Services and Administration, SSA. She has experience providing clinical services to adults, families, adolescents and children in various settings. Sophia has worked individually and in group settings with a clinically diverse population of clients. Her expertise includes working with clients who struggle with eating disorders, anxiety, depression, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, emotional/physical abuse, self-injury, and immigration/acculturation issues. In addition to being a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Sophia is also dually certified as a School Social Worker. She is dedicated to using her clinical psychotherapy skills as well as her training in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), solution focused therapy, family systems theory, and a holistic approach to therapy to help clients experience the mind/body connection and aid them in an active exploration of their internal and interpersonal challenges. Throughout the therapeutic process, Sophia encourages clients to use awareness to open up to new and alternative ways of being. Through an exploration of the past and present, she hopes that each client will uncover insight into their thoughts, emotions, and behavior that will empower and support them in transforming their lives.

Rachel Levin, M.D.

Rachel Levin, M.D. is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. She is a graduate of Rush Medical College. Dr. Levin continued her training in pediatrics at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center where she remains on staff as a clinical instructor. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and has been in private practice as a pediatrician since 1995.

Dr. Levin has a specific interest in behavioral pediatrics. Her areas of concentration include ADD/ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, learning disabilities, mood issues, childhood developmental issues and other school related concerns. Dr. Levin has a background in clinical psychology, which has aided her in developing a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to working with patients, their families and teachers. This approach will improve her patients' educational potential and enhance their social and emotional development.

Debra P. Wolff, Psy. D.

Dr. Wolff is a licensed clinical psychologist. She received her Master's and Doctoral degrees from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. She has extensive experience assessing and treating children, adolescents, and adults in various settings (private practice, hospital, day treatment). Dr. Wolff strives to establish a connection with each patient based on empathy and an understanding of each individual's unique perspective and life history. She is interactive and believes effective psychotherapy requires a partnership and collaboration between therapist and patient. She helps individuals gain insight into the motivations behind their actions, thoughts, and emotions. She assists them to understand how they may be replaying ineffective patterns in their lives and discover ways to alter these patterns. Dr. Wolff focuses on strengths and resources, and encourages patients to use those strengths to enhance their lives and attain their goals. Dr. Wolff believes one style of therapy cannot fit all patient's needs. Therefore, she has been trained in cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and family systems therapies, and utilizes each depending on patient needs. Her primary clinical interests include depression, anxiety disorders (phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder) and behavioral disorders (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder). When working with children, Dr. Wolff believes strongly in the importance of consulting with parents, teachers, and other providers to ensure effective, thorough treatment.

Christine V. Petersen, Psy. D.

Dr. Petersen is a licensed clinical psychologist who has extensive experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families dealing with a wide array of issues that interfere with their ability to function to their full potential. These issues include depression, anxiety, trauma, grief/loss, divorce/separation, parenting issues, relationship issues, and emotional stress due to life transitions. She also has considerable experience working in the areas of abuse, neglect, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. Dr. Petersen believes that therapy can help bring about change, personal growth, and healing. She utilizes an integrative approach to treatment and tailors therapy to fit the unique needs of each client. She views therapy as a collaborative process in which she guides the client in identifying and exploring current symptoms and issues that are causing distress or impacting their quality of life. This is done while recognizing how earlier life experiences shape the course of the individual's life from childhood to adulthood. Through therapy, she helps clients improve their self expression, develop a better understanding of their self defeating thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and find more positive and productive ways to cope with life stressors and navigate personal relationships.

Marisa Kunz, Psy. D.

Dr. Kunz is a licensed clinical psychologist. She received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology, Schaumburg campus. Prior to that, she attended Western Illinois University, where she obtained her Masters of Science in Clinical and Community Mental Health. She also attended the University of Dayton in Ohio, where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Dr. Kunz has extensive experience working with individuals of all ages in various settings, such as community mental health centers, public and private schools, therapeutic day schools, outpatient clinics, and private practice. She has experience helping individuals deal with various disorders, such as Autism/Asperger's Syndrome, Anxiety, Mood Disorders, Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder, and interpersonal relationship difficulties. Dr. Kunz specializes in the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with severe emotional and behavioral disorders, as well as early childhood developmental disabilities. Dr. Kunz's therapeutic style integrates techniques including cognitive-behavioral, client-centered, interpersonal, play therapy, and family systems. Dr. Kunz emphasizes a collaborative and interactive approach to therapy and believes that through solid communication, questioning, and self-exploration individuals have the capacity to live healthy and productive lives.

Jeni Brickman, LCSW, SSW

Jeni Brickman, LCSW,SSW holds a Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Illinois at Urbana, School of Social Work. She is on staff at Northshore University Health Systems Hospitals and is a Professor at Aurora University in the School of Social Work. Jeni has worked with adults and adolescents from diverse backgrounds providing services with sensitivity toward gender, sexual orientation, religion, and cultural background. She specializes in treating a variety of issues including post-traumatic stress disorder, abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, grief and loss, chronic pain and illness, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and relationship/marital concerns. Jeni utilizes Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with personality disorders. She has extensive experience in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) and other crisis management trainings. Currently Jeni is receiving additional certification in Gottman couples counseling. In addition to being a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, she is also dually certified as a School Social Worker. Jeni also offers consultation for social workers working towards licensure. She is a provider for the Illinois Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB). Jeni effectively emphasizes an integrative approach in psychotherapy combining relational, cognitive-behavioral, and psychodynamic therapies to facilitate a holistic therapeutic process focused on helping clients become mindful of their experiences. Once insight is gained into how these experiences affect persons emotionally, physically, and spiritually, clients are more able to live life to their fullest potential.


Melissa Miller, Psy.D.

Melissa Miller, Psy.D., received her Masters of Arts and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, with a specialization in Child and Adolescent Psychology. She has been a Licensed Clinical Psychologist since September 2009.

Dr. Miller has extensive experience working with individuals of all ages in various settings that include behavioral health centers, hospitals, schools, in-home, and private practice. Dr. Miller’s areas of specialization include the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents and families that have suffered from neglect, sexual/physical abuse and trauma. Dr. Miller has experience in working with children and adolescents with emotional, behavioral issues, ADHD, depression, anxiety, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, sibling and peer interactions, and attachment issues. Her therapeutic interventions include play therapy, cognitive-behavioral, client-centered, solution-focused, family systems, and art therapy. Dr. Miller has been trained in psychoeducational, psychosexual, psychosocial and multidisciplinary specialty assessments.


Michael Caponi, Psy.D.

Michael Caponi, Psy.D, is a licensed clinical psychologist. He received his Master's and Doctoral degrees from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. He has extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults across a range of treatment settings including private group practice, community mental health, forensic, and school settings. Dr. Caponi believes in the client’s ability to change and in the power of the therapeutic relationship to facilitate healing. His approach is empathic and individualistic as he strives to understand a client’s unique personal background and history. Utilizing a collaborative therapist-client relationship, Dr. Caponi seeks to discover the unique decisions a client has made regarding self, others, and the world. He seeks insight into how such decisions influence the cognitive map a client uses to navigate the landscape of thoughts, behavior, and emotion. Helping clients with the development of more effective coping and problem solving is the goal. Dr. Caponi uses a strength focused approach to encourage self-efficacy, increase adaptation, and improve intrapersonal and interpersonal functioning. While Dr. Caponi conceptualizes behavior through an Adlerian orientation, he also makes use of insight-oriented, psychodynamic, and mind-body techniques to build awareness within the client of the unique motivation belying their movement through life. Dr. Caponi’s clinical interests include depression, anxiety, lifespan issues, and assisting clients within phases of ambiguity and transition.


Dr. Denise Casey, Psy.D, CADC, NBCCHT

Dr. Casey is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with a Certification in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling and is Nationally Board Certified in Advanced Clinical Hypnosis. With over 30 years of experience she has committed herself to partnering with people in a holistic integrative manner. With an emphasis on resiliency and spirituality she helps people rebuild and find their own strength within themselves. Honesty, feedback, hope and transformation are essential in the process. Having worked with addictions, eating disorders, relationships, survivors of trauma, grief, impaired professionals, and young adults, Dr. Casey welcomes everyone into a safe zone that allows for healing and personal growth. Having been a caregiver, her own life experiences and a deep faith provide Dr. Casey with a sense of compassion caring and understanding.
